If tears are not streaming down your face, you have no soul my friends... ;)
You're right Andrikos, Host of Seraphin is really poignant. Another one with that effect;

@scissor; Word! Totally!

No other female/male vocalist duo that i know can touch Lisa Gerrard's and Brendan Perry's magic...
PS Jethro you're right, I don't know Camel which is probably a big reason why I don't "get" Opeth's
latest. I'll check them out though, I'm always open to new and good music.
PPS Scissorlocked: so true

Jethro, every time I listen "Summoning of the Muse" it sends chills down my spine. It never, ever fails. What an amazingly inspired work of art. Wow, just wow...

"Yeah, no.
After 15 listens this is my one word review:
Booooooooring... (2.75/5 not sure if I'm going to round up or down...)
Too bad because I really wanted to like it.
And don't assume that the lack of "deathliness" and "growliness" is discouraging me.
After all, my 2nd favorite band of all times is the ethereal and divine Dead Can Dance...
My reason for not liking it, is well, the album is just not that interesting...
I wouldn't call it "DT pretentious" but it's definitely marching towards that unfortunate direction.
I think that for Opeth this is a music shift by necessity and not by choice.
It's quite obvious that Mikael Akerfeldt's growling prowess and ability has deteriorated significantly and his vocal cords
just can't take it anymore.
Too bad Opeth didn't hire a "backup growler" to fill in... ;)
PS "Watershed" average? Sistah, please!"
From the reviews I've read, and maybe I shouldn't, but I believe Mikael, this was a sincere want to change direction. He doesn't seem as though he LIKES the growls anymore. And honestly, I only started liking them because of Opeth (and a few others) It was Mikael's music (and others I won't mention) that I was drawn toward, not the screaming, and I feel like his opinion on music now is pretty similar to my own in a lot of ways... Anyway, I think it was a stylistic decision more than a necessity...my only real proof to that is that...they could have still produced a "heavy" record without screaming...they just chose not to. The distortion here is intentionally weaker, while the complexity, and overall sound of the band is pretty much as good as it's ever been...just in different ways this time. I think that's what makes this excel for me, and after listening a few more times, I'm seriously considering bumping my rating to 4.

Great Album. Amazing musicianship. Grows on you. In my opinion one of Opeth's best next to Still life and Blackwater park.
