He sure as hell likes himself a lot. Of course some prog guys do that too, maybe even more so. But this being groovy doesn't prevent it from being rather tiring and (at times) pointless wankery. I'm not exactly a fan of very "ambitious" guitar playing in general. For example, when I think of a truly brilliant LZ song I think of "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You", but definitely not of Page's groovy jams. I know a lot of guys get off on some virtuoso guitar performance, I never really got that though.

A 15 track 'Best Of' taking in all of White's greatest songs would be a classic but beyond the hit singles and prime album cuts I find his stuff dull

Artistic compromise dude, bowing to to what's 'popular' and so on. If I didn't show a bit of give and take with others and their 'feelings' i'd be a total arsehole.

Technically giving in on your ideals in real life is worse than in music, since they are more important. The main reason why people compromise is cause of the severe collateral damage if they don't.
In music it's actually not all that hard not to compromise. Of course we could talk about countless bands that "sold out" or were taylor-made for the charts from the very beginning. But I'd argue that hardly any of those really compromised, they either had no ideals from the very beginning or they ran out of ideas and became lazy. Still not exactly admirable, but understandable actually.

Your ideals in life change constantly and you're more likely to adapt given certain scenarios, experiences, respect shown to others. Living and learning.
In music if you don't base your band on something and have a common ground in which to vent you might as well pack it in. If you cash those ideals in you're total scum.

I'd argue though that quite a lot of good to great bands didn't have real ideals, at least not in the way we'd define the word. The B-52's were in it to have fun more than anything else, same goes for Collins-era Genesis (which isn't as bad as some people claim), maybe even for early Cure. And the early Beatles weren't exactly the most idealistic guys either. Of course there's something like musical integrity, but accusing some artist of betraying it is almost always quite a stretch.

I get where Kris comes from, I'm not very fond of virtuoso stuff as well. However, I actually think White Stripes albums aren't that detailed or have that much of a show-off quality to them. I find WS albums very simple and straight-forward in their approaching methods and in substance, hence why I like the band so much. Jack White as a person really likes himself, that's a fact. However, I can't see how that's reflected in his music (at least in The White Stripes).

@Zifteruften With that I was really just referring to Ball and Biscuit, the other stuff on here (haven't heard any other LP by them yet) is pretty straight-forward for sure and quite decent too, it just doesn't blow me away most of the time.

What about Queens of the Stone Age?

Combining the creativity of blues rock with the grittiness of garage rock, The White Stripes created a modern classic.
