The song is a medley, the Gloria part is a Van Morrison cover and the rest is original.
But also I believe there's a distinction between singer and narrator, so it's not necessarily lesbian for a woman to sing a love song to a girl.
That said, Patti Smith is known to present herself in an androgynous way, so the song fits into that aspect of her personality/artistry.
