The odd thing about learning to scream is finding your "distortion box". The way my vocalist explained it to me is that you
have to get used to both the sighing thing and it also helps to practice trying to make "computer voices" to get yourself
familiar with the distortion portion. The area where most people mess it up is they get the sighing thing down and they realize
it doesn't sound right so instead of just adding grit they push their voice improperly and wind up hurting themselves. I don't
know, to me the process came kind of naturally it then again I'm a baritone (at 15 hell yeah) and so I sound more like Mikeal
Akderfelt then, say, Jesse Leech but I do know it's more of matter of control then actual force.

Sorry if that didn't make any sense it's like 3:30 AM and I'm really tired. :P

No i get that, especially the straining part. I just don't know how to turn that sigh into a scream. My vocal fry'd scream is around a mid register level.

Another thing that might sound kind of weird but has worked for a lot of people I know is paying attention to the sound a dog makes when it barks. Think about it: they basically scream they're entire life without blowing their voice out. I mean I don't really know how to explain it but just to try emulate that sound at first and then work on annunciation and tone and whatnot. Also, I have forgotten what fry screaming is as opposed to any other type so sorry if I'm still not being helpful.

I could never get fry...it just didn't sound right to me. As an occasional vocalist for a bunch of local metal bands (stand in, whatever), I generally use a combination of false-cord screaming, growls, hardcore shouting, spoken word and melodic singing. But in all honesty, it took me two years to learn to do harsh vocals. Either I'd just not get any sound, or I'd get sound but I'd push too hard and end up hurting myself. What I do reccomend (especially for fry, but every time of screaming too) is watching Melissa Cross' Zen of Screaming. It doesn't have much screaming in it, but the warmups it teaches you are great.

General tip though: you should be pushing with your stomach, not your chest, your distortion should come from your chest or high in your throat, not your voicebox, and if it hurts, you're doing it completely wrong. It takes ages to get, but one day it just clicks. I can scream all I want now, hours at a time, and my voice gets slightly croaky after prolonged abuse, but that's about it. Also, learning to scream while playing in a band without a microphone is definitely not the healthiest thing I did. Attempting to scream over drums and guitars more than once blew my voice.

Zen of Screaming helps a tiny bit with the diaphragm thing, but mostly its just practice and experimentation. Just try and get to a place where you can push without hurting yourself and the rest comes naturally. Imitating a dog's bark is a great starting place, as fr33 said.

I can sing, maybe not as well as I used to but pretty in tune. With practice I might be able to get it back up to its original levels. I'm baritone/bass (I don't really know which) but I don't think my range is that big. TBH I don't even think my voice is suited for singing but we'll see.

My voice is like Rody Walker's, but with a two-note range, and less manly.

@Anarchist: just work on developing your head voice in addition to try trying to keep your lower normal voice. For one stretching your range is always nice and two it helps you get used to singing without hurting yourself (cuz it's angsty n stuff). Also, the Zen of Screaming rules. I do the warmups every day, sometimes twice a day (tenor and baritone).

I can kinda do tenor, I just have to falsetto and it sounds ridiculous. But yeah, I'm looking up exercises and shiz

my falsetto sounds retarded so I basically never use it. Not that I really need it for my band right now haha.

I was pissing my brother off yesterday by singing to Hysteria by Muse whilst playing it on my hi-fi at max volume.

Dude I'm a baritone and I just sing it lower.

Also, newer Opeth.
