I’ve always thought of Exciter as Ultra 2.0. It’s noticeably weaker, but has many similarities in terms of mood, song structures and album sequencing. A poor man’s Ultra, basically.

With a heavier emphasis on guitars and more upbeat songs, this one rather resembles Songs of Faith and Devotion to me. Again, Playing The Angel is weaker, but even they start similarly with those alienating sounds.

This is way stronger than SoF&D for me. It’s one of their better albums whereas I couldn’t ever get into thar one, even back when I was listening to a lot of Depeche

I need to go back to Exciter, I like that they doubled down on the trip hop elements and Mark Bell as producer was an amazing choice, the songwriting just wasn't quite there.

unironically one of the blandest examples of trip hop-ish ness I’ve ever heard

For an album called Exciter it is basically a bunch of really chill songs. Free Love, Dream On are nice. I remember Shine. NONE of the songs excited me. I don't remember that album very well.
Wait we are talking about Exciter here. Just because I felt this album was more Ultra than that? Uhh neat.

Exciter and Spirit are their two most bland albums imo

Exciter is good bland.
Underrated

Agreed I still put both of those albums at a 3/5. Everything else in their discog is above that.
