Great review for a great band. They definitely did better on this album than their past work.

"Whales" is the most perfect song I've heard in ages... If that makes any sense.

@kanecooper:
Your face is wank. This album is tits..... Big tits......... With perfectly sized areolas that differ from person to person depending on their own personal taste.
Ah, virginity. Such an innocent time

this album is really good, I'm having a hard time getting into it though. it feels like a 4, but for some reason, in the mood I'm in, this is hitting me like a 3
i'll try again tomorrow

I hope you use those exact words when you're around the "ladies"

And Wizard, you are entitled to your opinion, but is it really fair to say they're unoriginal because they were influenced by a great band? Honestly I heard more of a Cynic influence on this in regards to their guitar tuning, but I hardly heard a downright plagiarized sound on here.
Unoriginal doesn't have to be a bad thing, I just happen to find this particular unoriginal band/album boring. Trust me, when you listen to metal, it's hard not to love bands that are unoriginal and yet somehow manage to hit that right spot.

im definitely feel more of a cynic influence in this than death. Anyways, this is definitely better than CDC.

If I'm in a PG mood. On a side note, referring to "ladies" as "ladies" is an instant creeper alert (unless you're using that word in ironically to highlight the creeper status of my previous comments, then touché).

"Drifting Figures" sounds like Sieges Even, circa "The Art of navigating By the Stars" era. It's nice to see an unabashed virtuosity handled with such restraint. I've got to admit, these kids have certainly come a long way from "Monuments'" cyclical throes of tech-metal passages. Kinda of ironic, considering "The
Collective's" album cover is apparently based off of a variant phyllotaxis circle. I've gotta raise my rating.

Note for note, the leads on here are purely Death, I have no idea where the hell you guys are hearing Cynic.

I completely get what you mean about "Whales". I love the whole album, but that one song and it's riffs stand out a ton to me for some reason.
And I'm amazed how far these guys have come. I've always liked them but wasn't really able to consistently listen to them until this album.

@Wizard
Are you serious? The majority of Schuldiner's solos were based on little to no theory (despite some being close to harmonic/melodic minors), which is clearly not the case in these solos. They don't "feel" the same as Death, and like their last album rely on dorians/locrian modes. Tone wise, they are closer to Cynic, hence, the hint of resemblance.

first instrumental album ive heard in a while which is excellent all the way through.

I would like to point out how unoriginal these guys are. Some parts feel like they took the
best parts off Death's Sound of Perseverance and slowed them down and then tried to cover up their
horrible Chuck Schuldiner aping with a few progressive (and barely jazz) sections. I almost feel as
if half of you haven't even delved into the instrumental metal genre because of the ratings and
general masturbatory bullshit that surrounds a ton of irrelevant albums on this site (who knows for
what reason). I'm not harping on anyone for liking this because I probably would have shit my pants
for this five years ago. Let's face it though, albums like this are good at disguising themselves as
something genuine. Also, first to call Prosthetic Records starting a trend with signing a slew of
instrumental metal bands.
You could just say you find this band unoriginal and boring without letting your false sense of
superiority leak through. So far you have eluded only to the guitar work being reminiscent to Chuck,
and them consequently throwing in "barely-jazz" (is this some sort of insult?) parts to mislead
their listeners into thinking they're something special. I'll admit, I'm not a huge fan of
instrumental metal, most of the instrumental music I listen to comes from post-rock, but I don't see
how you can totally write these guys off. I think you would be hard pressed to find what band they
ripped off while writing The Levitated. When I hear clean jazz-influenced two handed tapping in such
beautiful chord progressions, I think Scale the Summit. Once again, I'm no expert in instrumental
metal, so if you could educate me on what metal band successfully incorporated that technique into
their sound before, please do.
