As someone that grew up listening to punk and then transfered that love into strange bullshit metal I've grown used to having a certain amount of energy imbued into the production. It's something that I expect but with this the production just seems horribly compressed and sterile. None of the energy shines through at all. It reminds me a lot of recent Jimmy Eat World albums. When I see them live it's incredible but on CD the exact same songs just put me to sleep. Hazards of Love and The Crane Wife were able to get by on this kind of production because the music was heavier and more eccentric, but when it's stripped of it's eccentricities the production plays a lot larger part.

Hm I thought this was a great little album. :/
Saying that, I've never heard their previous albums.

This album is good. No one wants to admit it because they don't want to hurt their hipster street cred. Why don't you get your Pabst Blue Ribbon out of my face and go die. :-)

"i just listened to colin meloy playing the album acoustic and i loved it but i still cant stand it the way it was put to tape on this album. bummer"
So you agree the songs are solid it's just something about the album specifically that doesn't hit you right?

I really don't understand.
So, I thought this was great, though I haven't listened to their other works.
In comparison to their other albums, does this fair as well?

Yeah, it's on par with I think everything they've done; they're very consistent. I think you're misinterpreting Adam's opinion (which I'm still trying to figure out) as a general consensus, which it doesn't appear to be. I recommend listening to their discography from here backwards; should be a pretty rewarding journey.

Valid points, I suppose. I guess I never really figured that this album would need an energetic production and that if the songwriting was solid enough, even if the production did irk me (it doesn't but I'm easy to please in that department), I would get over it pretty quickly.

Honestly the production is not at all something to get worked up about to this extent. Like for
anything.

Not as good as The Crane Wife or Picaresque, but it has a few excellent songs. For me the best ones are: This Is Why We Fight and January Hymn.

You know, I've never bothered to check out this band before even though I've seen them all over this website. Well, I heard "This Is Why We Fight" on the radio on the way to work the other day, and it's pretty incredible. I guess I'll have to check out the rest now.

Loved it, just didn't think it was their best.

It's not their strongest album like Hazards of Love, but it's enjoyable and indeed succeeds as a crowd pleaser.

I love this. I realized yesterday when I was building my sad playlist that this album had like nothing I could put on it, but that's a good thing.
