I dig most of the experiments on this album but I can see how one would find them uninteresting, especially not being prepared for it. I was stoked that agalloch went in a direction that I didn't expect. It may not be as solid as Ashes but I feel like it's a refined compilation of the sounds of past albums (mostly Pale Folklore). Ghost of the Midwinter Fires is the only one that I find to be somewhat lackluster.
I agree that Ghosts is probably the weakest song here (They Escaped and To Drown are rather like a intro/outro to me). While it's still a great song, I find the middle to be a little uninspired.
