'Science Fiction', the 30 minute EP from Canadian/Mexican/American singer-songwriter Caleb McAlpine is pretty good for a self-recorded debut. It's strengths lie in several passages of handy bass & guitar work guiding the 7 tracks through a diverse range of genres. Moments of jazz (Michael Buble had Caleb deported from Canada) give way to prog-rock instrumentals, while John Mayer like acoustic pop-rock (without the philandering) is also prevalent. Vocals & hooks are the most inconsistent elements, with attempts at variety proving hit & miss (especially the mumbled drawl). As a consequence, parts of songs tend to eventuate better than the whole, except on highlight opener 'I was Wrong'.

2.5? A bit low for the future Elliot Smith. Don't you think so, Davey?

Even some of the greatest artists of all time had to start off somewhere.

While some may feel we shouldn't, I'm treating Caleb just like any artist. Sure, I'm keeping in mind the production situation, but even then, there are far more established artists with a much larger budget, that I have rated under a 2.5.

You're just a fellow bedroom philosopher... I mean recorder. You should both be thankful I passed your releases.

Now go do something worthwhile and review the new Short Stack album.

Yeah, they use enough hair spray to evaporate a person from at least 15 feet away.
