if you're going to make fun of the lyrics you should at least try to find a line that actually proves the lyrics suck instead of making up lyrics

well if in that line he is saying that beauty and art is to be found in death and not life, where else in the song does he seem to be indicating that life is art. in the rest of the song he seems to describe the world of lived experience as dull and colorless

so again Thanatos or Death seems more artistic than Bios or Life. don't know what you think about this, though

it is also symbolic that the revelation of Death or the thanatotic would be hypnotic, coming through Sleep, an escape from Life or the biotic, since in Greek mythology Sleep (Hypnos) was the brother of Death (Thanatos)

anyway, your other favorite lyric was: "uncertain as the fingering/of a chord torn prematurely/from a pianos womb"

what do you think this means, John Hanson?

ok that is interesting to know, John. do you think it is necessary to understand what lyrics mean in order to say are good or bad lyrics? or do you think that they're good if they just sound pretty or profound?

certainly some lyrics are just intended to "paint a nice picture," to create an interesting image. some lyrics are just supposed to sound nice or flow well. other lyrics are supposed to convey meaning. i would say that the best lyrics accomplish all these things at once. but still, is it important to know what the fuck someone is talking/singing/daemonically screaming about before one says that the lyrics are good or bad?

and no, the user MichaelJordan is an evil troll twat who just wants to disparage the greatness of CTTS and besmirch the good name of the Sputnik Staff and their holy Top 100 Albums of the last decade

yes, John, of course. but presumably lyrics are also "about" something, and Drew Speziale has explicitly stated that there is a concept behind the lyrics and music of the album. so in order to say if the lyrics are good, it would seem to be important to know what these lyrics are "about," to know if they effectively communicated that concept, correct?

with this in mind, i am interested in knowing how you think the theme of Life (or more probably Death) as Art connects with the overarching theme of ATRU, which the great Drew has unambiguously stated is the theme of self-development?

John, i am not trying to argue with you -- just to understand what makes lyrics good and what makes Drew's lyrics "the most interesting in the genre" and "pure poetry" for you. i liked your examples and was not trying to hurt your feelings

you are the greatest and wisest of the Sputnik shaman Staff and i am trying to learn from you. please tell me what you think makes lyrics good and the reason Drew's lyrics so great!

as i said, i am your humble pupil, and ask only for your wisdom. so again i ask you to please tell me what you think makes lyrics good and the reason Drew's lyrics so great!

this way i can tell others and explain to them why they are great. it's not something i need to figure out on my own, because you are the wiser than i and therefore it would be helpful for me to learn from you by understanding your reasons

also we can crush the Sputnik trolls once and for all by debunking their evil claims that Drew writes bad lyrics

yes John Hanson, thank you. it is a great honor to be your pupil/poophole

doctor Channing Freeman, i ask you two questions:

1) are CTTS's lyrics good?
2) do you like my sterling refutation of the evil troll haters in my review?

all you need to know iwrestledyourmomonce is this

Don’t listen to critics; they either just haven’t been initiated yet or they’re simply not open-minded enough to understand As the Roots Undo’s emotional profundity. This is the ultimate “grower” album, people. Even though it sounds like intolerable shit at first, after repeated relistening and constant reassurances from the Sputnik fanbase that you’ll eventually rate it a 5, the cumulative brain damage you suffer will allow you to hear the album’s true beauty.

This allows the band’s incredible lyrics to shine through the chaotic instrumentation.

Yeah I really didn't like it at first listen. But if you get past the first impression of it being cluttered and badly produced, there's really sort of a brilliant orchestrated passion throughout the entire album. The instrumentals are constructed brilliantly and the lyrics, while undoubtedly pretentious, actually create brilliant imagery along with the music. I actually find Downer's soundoff to really explain the album's nature the best, sadly.

I don't understand the complaints about bad production, it sounds absolutely fine to me, in fact for screamo the production is pretty polished
