Very well written review. I agree this is all about "Eminem getting over Eminem", but this is exactly why I think the album is amazing. Yes, the Chorusus suck; yes the features are forgettable; but its a worthy sacrifice for such a brazen return to pure lyricism imbued with emotive content. Your absolutely right, this is Em expelling his demons, offering a more vulnerable, introspective turn than we're used too (or at least haven't seen for a while). His last two albums had him spinning his wheels, trying to maintain a Pop relevance - do we really want the old Em, as Adam says? More songs about Kim, and celebrity bashing? Not I. He's past that now, thank God. So obviously, I completley disagree with this: "But self-deprecation is a horrible color on Eminem, and it certainly doesn’t suit him as well as, say, pissing on B-list celebrities and beating the shit out of Kim". The best thing he could of done was distance himself from Dre, who woyuld have probably limited this album to more vacuous, ring-tone friendly fare. He's taken a different path, and I commend him for that.
And how can you say the anger and intensity is missing? Some of his verses here are so hardcore.

Still ned to hear this, not sure about Pink, Rihanna and Lil Wayne collabs though. Been listening to SSLP & MMLP a lot in preparation. Probably won't reach those heights though.

Nah, and if you shouldn't go into thinking it will be. To me its a stretch to compare them, they're vastly different and not just in general quality.

I definitely won't be going into it with the intention of comparing it to those albums, just hoping it improves on Relapse.

Oh now that it does. Then again, it isn't that hard to improve on shit...
As for the album cover, this one of those rare occassions where the album cover doesn't conjour images of the music for me, either one of them.
