Beer Commercials is the best thing they did other than POI, easily. Besides, like I said, OMNI is a great record. It's just their least great record.

fair enough, it's too early for me to say that and i just started listening to this band. i was just making a joke about beer commercials.

I'd say POI > Menos = Omni > HRP > Beer Commercials
Beer Commercials has some great songs but I think it's by far their most average album. And I actually think Menos has a ton of great songs it just doesnt flow as well as POI.
Omni will probably surpass Menos for me once I give it more listens

I saw them in Detroit last night. They were at least twice as good as the last time I saw them. They played 6 songs off OMNI, like 3 from POI, 3 from Menos, and a few randoms from Pre-Menos. An all around good setlist, and the light show was awesome (very colorful).

Waior says: Planet of Ice (5) > Menos El Oso (4) > Omni (3.5) > Highly Refined Pirates (3.5). You are
certainly welcome to scrutinize.
Granted, I haven't heard Beer Commercials... I'm seeing them in May with Young the Giant. Who was supporting the Detroit show?

Waior: Young The Giant and Everest were the supporting acts. It was the first night of the full lineup. Though both bands were actually quite talented, Young The Giant really surprised me at how good they were, just as how MtB turned me onto Annuals during their previous national tour.

Young the Giant are terrific, I agree, glad to hear their liveshow is likewise. Looking forward to their debut later this year...

I'm just a firm believer that most individuals on this site are afraid of progression. This is probably one of their more captivating albums. From the lyrics to the use of every instrument in their arsenal. Even the new ones. It does slow down after Animal Backwards but thats just because to me Animal is just so alive as a song that you expect a lot more after that. It might not be their best but it is top 3 and its all new so it's getting limitless spins by me currently

This album isn't a progression though...

yes it is. Not my favorite style though, but the technicality is amaaaazing they are studio wizards.

Not a progression? Seriously? The transitions and different instruments and sounds that were used to make up each part of the songs alone is genuine progression. All while keeping with the same groove/trance like sound that MTB is known for. Maybe even being more funky. Granted its not entirely like your favorite Minus The Bear album, but the electronic vibe to some of the tracks that some say are over done actually seem to compliment the intense guitar and drum work which has always stood out. Many bands have tried this already but none can just add them so seamlessly, correctly and perfectly as MTB have done with this album.

and honestly who in their right mind would just flip the script with a track like Animal Backwards and be able to just completely kill it like MTB.

I think what I mean is, it's not the logical progression from Planet of Ice, at least not how I see it. I think this is a great album, nothing more, nothing less. It isn't the worst Minus The Bear, nor is it the best. I think this sounds more like their older material than the newer, hence no progression. If this album took off where Planet left off I would expect more angular riffs, more jams, groovier bass and better choruses. Omni seems to have gone back to the simplistic songwriting and straighforward structure of Menos and Pirates, which is fine, but it's not a progression for the band. The only thing they really did differently is add more synth and electronics.

animal backwards is pretty lame anyways.
album is more of an algamation of previous albums/sounds, with a fresh perspective, than a progression. more of a sidestep.

^^ This. If I had to make a comparison I'd say it's kinda like John Mayer's Battle Studies. It's ok but hardly a progression from Continuum, more of a companion piece, albeit an inferior one
