You've heard Cove perform live, right?
Maybe he's gotten epically better since right after the self-titled, but the three times I've seen them live (and most of the youtube videos I could find) he couldn't come close to hitting what he did in studio (or staying on pitch, for that matter).

"Good review! I loved Great White Whale but this was just too similar for my liking, I wanted them to change it up a bit more. And the singer should learn how to change it up sometimes... not bad for a post-hardcore high pitchd vocalist but just too damn average..." I'm actually not going to argue a great deal with your synopsis thejared. I obviously don't think these things bring down the album as much as you do, but you're not too far from the truth with your thoughts.
"okay this grew off quicker than riewoldt's hamstring." LOL... But it's doing the opposite for me, if anything. Play it on a hi-fi real loud for a pick-me-up.

I liked Furney's lyrics on 'GWWhale' better than here unfortunately. The lyrical comparison between the 2 is not really a good one full stop, since Furney writes weirder, mor cryptic, stuff, while Reber/Saosin are much more literal.
As for the 2 vocalists live, I cannot comment since I have not heard either.
