Ive heard Octavarium, Metropolis Part 2, and Systematic Chaos. I wasn't overly enthusiastic about any of them.

Maybe Awake would be more of your style.

oct. and systematic chaos are on the worst end of the DT scale. Strange you didnt like Scenes from a memory too much, maybe give it another go? I'd also agree with AB, Awake might be more your thing.

I gave Metropolis Pt. 2 a 4/5, but after revisiting it about 8 months ago I concluded that it wasn't really my thing. Maybe I'll give it another go; my musical taste has developed and changed a lot over the past year. Although I thought Octavarium was mostly piss poor, I quite enjoy "Panic Attack" on occasion. If you guys think I'd be partial to Awake then I'll take your advice and give it a chance.

Awake is their least indulgent album, and it's darker than their other stuff too. Try that and then Images. Octavarium and Systematic Chaos are nowhere near their best.

Take the Time is the most fun song DT have ever done.

Except for Systematic Chaos, I'd just go chronologically, starting with this.
This along with Awake is what got me into the band.

"Another Day" is one of my all-time favorite solos; perfectly balanced, melodic, emotional, and a fast section just technical enough to make the listener say- "wow, Petrucci is fuckin' good."

How could you hate on the LaBrie, he's a has an identifiable and wonderfully unique voice. Great album, although it's a little too glam for my taste, it made for a memorable listen

Actually you are wrong about Wait For Sleep. Maybe you weren't able to realize but Myung is playing bass. Except that, good review.
