if all music or literature or art is supposed to provide is an "escape" from everyday reality, then i would prefer that none of these things exist. i would rather think that they provide edification, education, and critical commentary on sociohistorical developments. fantasia and "escape" from reality might constitute one small aspect of music's existence, but they hardly exhaust its possibilities

HUGE miss, MJ. I agree with John, both hold merit, and music as a form of escape from reality is often the hardest hitting, emotionally. Music's ability to move people is its reason for existing, as is art's.

i said that "escape" might be one small aspect of it, but if it were the only one, then i would view it as almost as dangerous as religion, in the sense that it distracts from problems that exist in reality rather than having us face them and work them out

Haha, this is so ridiculous, now you're advocating atheism on sputnik. Religion isn't dangerous, nor would music be if its sole purpose was for pure enjoyment, it's the people who govern their lives around it and are extremists that are the issue. And to which problems do you refer? Life's main purpose is to have fun, is it not?

Extremists are the inevitable product of religion.

And obese people are the inevitable product of food, what's the REAL point, hm?

Life's main purpose is to have fun, is it not?

no, hedonism isn't the purpose...but let's set this point aside because it involves too much philosophical argumentation

there are all sorts of problems in the world. starvation, slavery, inequality, crime, injustice, etc. these are problems which some might try to mentally escape by imagining a perfectly just afterlife or by using music to alleviate or escape the pain of existence rather than face it and make the world better

luckily i don't think that music's only function is escape, and that it can actually help make the world better rather than just provide "a way out" of it

You can blame religion for mass delusion.

even if religious people are not extremists and not overtly or actively dangerous, i'd say that they're deluded and thus dangerous in their very passivity. i don't want this to turn into a debate on religion, though

I think you're trying to justify it with said reasoning for listening to absolve yourself of guilt for ACTUALLY enjoying it. These problems are of no real concern to a person like you or me. I don't listen to music to escape the problems which don't concern me, I listen to it for exactly the same reason that everyone else likes it.

I think you often forget that you're human. How are they possibly dangerous? They wouldn't be a threat to anyone because of the principles for which their lives are governed. Statement has no grounding.

I have no fucking clue why I listen to music, except that certain sounds tend to appeal to my mind and probably increase the flow of dopamine or whatever scientific reason there is for it. I mean escapism is a big factor, but a lot of the time it's just for some sort of background soundtrack.
