The intro to Breathe has gotta be the catchiest thing eveeer

Well it all changed in 2008. Metallica, being the OG's they were at this type of shit, refused to lose the Loudness War. So they dropped the nuclear bomb of distortion and shit dynamics on everyone's head like a fucking pimp.
Do you talk like this normally?
|
| |
i certainly hope so
|
| |
I don't get the whole "marketing" thing. loudness has nothing to do with how many people hear a song
|
| |
It's been scientifically proven that loudness releases serotonin in the brain and induces pleasure. That's why you turn the volume up on songs you like. Human beings are attracted to loud music like moths to a flame.
The recording industry has taken the volume knob out of your hands and in the process has destroyed the dynamics of the waveform. They did this so the album plays loud and you hear it and take notice of it, and hence the album sells better.
This was done slowly over the last 50 years. It went beyond the line and started destroying music some 20 years ago. No band wanted to have the quality album with dynamics, they wanted to keep up with other bands in the arms race and be heard.
This was pushed by record labels and bands to sell records(marketing). Obviously, an engineer in the sound room isn't going to master an album like this without some jackass suit prodding him. Why else do you think they are destroying music and mastering albums like this if not for money?

"It's been scientifically proven that loudness releases serotonin in the brain and induces pleasure. "
then what's the problem
|
| |
The music is being destroyed to increase volume! That's the problem. If I want it loud I have a volume knob. I don't want the record label/band/engineer to destroy the dynamics of the waveform, which is irreversible, to increase the loudness. If I want it compressed to hell, loud, and distorted, I can compress the quality master myself and turn it into shit. Please watch the video, it seems like you replied without watching it first.

Valerius dude, you might have some good points to make if you weren't so incredibly goddamned arrogant
|

I've tried to change many times, unsuccessfully. Your point is taken, and I'm completely aware of it, but this is who I am. I'm the type of person you either love or hate. I don't leave any room in the middle.
This issue right here is one I am not bending or breaking on. I absolutely love music and it's helped me through my life, and to see this atrocity that has been going on really angers me at the sheer insanity of it.

I'll agree with you that more and more albums are becoming over-compressed and amplified these days. The new Mastodon, for example, however awesome it may be (and it is), the production is compressed to high hell

There's nothing you can do to change it however, and preaching at us over an album as loved as this isn't doing you any favors.
|
| |
There *is* something I can do to change it. I can try to inform people about it when I see the opportunity, and as the word spreads and fans demand that their music be distributed properly this situation will take care of itself.
Brew, you were the one who questioned what I was saying in the first place? So I don't get where you are coming from. You, and others, question me, and then when I explain and back my argument up with facts, you tell me I am preaching and to fuck off? Don't question me if you don't want me to reply, it's a pretty basic concept.
I'm not looking for favors, I'm doing you the favor. I'm here to help. At the end of the day it's *your* music that is being destroyed. If you don't care about that, then just ignore my posts concerning the issue.

Informing =/= changing the music industry, not many fans are going to stop buying let alone pirating albums just because the leveling is screwed to hell; most don't care.
And informing can be done a lot better by those who come across as level headed rather than idiotic.
|
| |
You are wrong. Most don't *know*. Most *do* care. Not one person in this thread before jefflebowski entered was even aware of what the fuck I was talking about or that this album was in fact a victim of over-compression.
Knowledge is Power. Information is the backbone of revolution. This is me arming you. Saying that informing people of the truth doesn't change anything has to be one of the most ignorant things I've heard. Maybe we should just all go back and knap flint, live in caves, and hunt buffalo and deer?
This is simple. Ask someone if they want their music a bit lower in volume but better sounding, or louder and worse sounding. People are going to say lower volume but better sounding, because they can just turn the volume up...

People have the ability to choose, the Loudness War is one choice as is the current set mastering set up.
And we didn't know because we were, rather blissfully, unaware and UNCARING.

I understand, this is something that is documented and has some viable proof behind it; I still don't condone your way of "telling people" and I really do like the mastering here just fine.

I'd apologize, but, for the most part, I don't believe in them. Without repentance, apologies are empty. And I am not changing, because I can't change. If I could change myself, I'd make myself a perfect human being.
It's hard for me to talk to people. I'm an asshole, but I am not a total jerk. I tried the best I can to explain myself. I hope you can look past my tactless approach and just hear my message.
