We all start somewhere, even you did at one point hahahaha.
TRM, I would probably start with some more accessible death metal like Immolation, Morbid Angel, Cryptopsy. I know those bands are completely different from this, but it's where I started a long time ago. The thing is, these guys rely on a fucked up atmosphere and mix it up with brutal death metal. Do you listen to any atmospheric black metal? That would help ease you into these guys as well.

I have Morbid on my zune but have yet to listen, I tried Cryptopsy a while ago and liked it but didn't love it, I'll give it another try along with Immolation. I tried Sunn O))) a while ago if that is what you mean by atmospheric, but didn't really fall in love with it or anything. Thanks for the insight wiz, being one of the ones with the most experience here you should have everything figured out.

Hahahahaha I'm not even close to being the most experienced around here but I still know my shit. Immolation is one that I would try because they are kind of similar in respect to how dense Portal are and the overall atmosphere that this album captures. Try out Close to a World Below or Harnessing Ruin.
