No but seriously, Coverdale kinda sucks live

In the 70's he definitely didn't suck live. Listen to the version of Mistreated on the live album California Jamming, his vocals on that version destroy any of Dio's live (or studio) versions.

Mistreated is definitely one of the songs where he sounds epic, but for example, I've never believed

that he did a good live performance of Burn, California Jam's version is pretty average imo, actually

the only live version of Burn I like is the one in Phoenix Rising which is probably the one that no

one's interested in sadly

Other example could be Stormbringer; great in studio, but I don't think he ever did a good live

version of it, Hughes playing it live with Rata Blanca sounds better imo (even though it is full of

falsettos)

I think overall he sounded pretty decent live in the 70's, although certainly not perfect but Gillan was rarely even close to perfect live and he's regarded as one of the best rock vocalists ever.

Yeah well that's true, nor Gillan, Dio, Plant or Mercury, they never reached perfection live

I think I have a softer space in my heart to Hughes over Coverdale tbh

Finally got all their first 10 re-rated. Interesting to note how the band evolved from that debut to making one of the biggest live albums known to humanity.
