As a huge Three Days Grace fan, I'm pretty disappointed with this album.
Now though I admit to liking all that most musical "elitists" for lack of a better word despise, e.g. catchy but no substance, I also acknowledge many of the faults of the album.
I agree on many of the points - mainly about the lazy songwriting and guitar riffs.
But I must say, I do think you were a bit too harsh on them.
They did try more things (and did improve in drumming).
But I must ask, what do you mean by "anti-climactic choruses"?

And I would add one thing - it'd be nice if you tell people that you hate the genre in general.
For example, a person who enjoys heavier metal (I assume you do) would obviously give a mainstream metal band a lower grade than a person who enjoys the genre.

Nah, I don't hate the genre; I just think the formula they use here is too recycled. I actually like a few of their songs from the past.
When I said anti-climactic, I meant the band did a good job with a build-up in the verse but failed to follow through with a strong chorus. It's just my opinion though; I could see why people might find this appealing, but looking back at their past stuff, they could have done better.

Yeah. It's just not that good. I still don't recognize most of the songs when they come up on shuffle because they're just not memorable, and my friend burnt it for me right after it came out, so I've had it on there for quite some time. Not necessarily annoying or dislikable for me, I just don't have positive feelings for it.

I know what you mean.
Even though I'm a huge TDG fan, after three months I NEVER listen to the album completely through (or ANY album of theirs full except One X once in a while). Rather I opt to listen to their better songs individually.
To compare that, about ten months after the release, I still find myself listening to Red's Innocence and Instinct.
And I'm still unclear on the anticlimactic choruses --- can you give me an example of some songs on the album like that?

One more thing:
"If this is the best that they can offer after three years than they should probably reconsider their chemistry as a band. "
You need to change "than" to "then." I'll assume you know why. (Actually the "then" isn't really necessary in an if-then statement).

I was a bit surprised at just how poorly written this was. I decided to go through it today and edit what I could.
Thanks xtoxin for the advice, by the way.

I disagree that this album is the same as their other albums. Yes there are some similarities, as there will always be between albums from a band, but there are also some differences. This album shows a much softer side of TDG in places (particularly in "last to know." They used PIANO!). Also, there is a sadder feel in many of the songs as opposed to the angry feel of previous albums. Some of the songs even show a hint of hope, which TDG has never previously used.
Overall I like the album, the only downfall of it is poorly written lyrics in places.

not bad but they needed to evolve a bit

I personally like the album. Sure, I may have my favorites, but what album doesn't have songs that are better than the rest? Lost in you, although it wasn't a favorite, brought new styles and instruments into play, giving the album itself a different feel. Along with that, Life starts now and other such songs are very different from previous song, coming from a completely different style of the same kind of rock, if that makes sense to you. I feel that your review was very well written, and honestly well thought over, but I believe you were biased and gave them an undeserved low rating.

Ugh

Their formulaic as all hell. Everything they do is generic and completely predictable - it's music for those who can't
appreciate actual music and are easily amused.

See here's where we disagree. I find that they may be repetitive and about power chords, but I still find myself getting in to the tune and getting my blood pumping to sing along. To each his own, I guess.

Jesus, elitist much? Some people just want to hear a catchy hook set to a "metal" environment.

Honestly really enjoy this album. Good third effort even if it's not up to the same caliber of One-X.
Shame the new album is probably going to be awful. Matt should stick to My Darkest Days.

I know that this is a review from 2009 but I'm going to comment on this anyway. The album may have been an attempt at making another One-X, but personally it doesn't make it less enjoyable for me. There are still some really good songs on this album. Although my thoughts on this album are particularly bias because I am a MASSIVE Three Days Grace fan. Not a terrible album, just not the usual punch from 3DG I think we're all used to. Still has songs that I can tap my foot to or get stuck in my head with for a couple of weeks.

I'd be lying if I said that I didn't at least get some enjoyable "cheap feels" with Lost in You.
