Is it weird that the chorus melody in "One Tree Hill" reminds me just a little bit of "Hound Dog"?
You run like a riverrrrrrr... BARKIN' ALL THE TIME

"I've never been able to get into this band apart from this album."
"I mean if you were only gonna pick one to like, this is the one to pick"
this is hardly an "outlier" as far as their 80s discog goes tho
I could understand someone making that kind of comment for Achtung or Pop or something, since those were sort of one of a kind for them, but this is pretty definitive 80s U2

it sorta is. their first three are a lot more post punky than this, and while the unforgettable fire has a similar feel to it (largely thanks to the production), it's not nearly as refined and concise as this is, and without some of the more earthy elements of songs like running to stand still. but even still, the post wasnt really saying its an outlier stylistically. it was more just saying that its the best (which id probably agree with nowadays)

This is really refined and beautiful, as much as I love Unforgettable Fire and Achtung, this is my favorite. One of the best rock albums of the past 30 years.

i think my dad accidentally threw out my vinyl copy of this. shame because where the streets have no name sounded fucking beautiful
only thing holding this back from a 5 is how fucking overplayed i still havent found what im looking for is for me

How would that have any impact on how good a song it is? It's one of U2's best, and while good, their 00s hits are way more overplayed, at least in my experience.

the problem is the first three songs on here have been spun to death over the years whereas I had never heard a second of the second half until I listened to the album in full
it's hard to accurately get that feeling of listening to an album for the first time when you know every word to the first 15 minutes and none of the rest. Feels more like half a greatest hits release

With or Without You still gets the feels going.

That's true of a lot of their albums. Just means this might require more listens, which is hardly a chore or something.

no what I mean is, because of the cluster attack of singles at the start, there is no way to ever get the genuine "fresh eyes" experience of this album. Ever. Multiple listens do not change that one bit, they'll actually just reinforce the imbalance
Sure Unforgettable Fire has Pride, War has New Years Day etc but no other album has all three singles right at the start, and singles which have been so thoroughly overplayed

I understood what you meant. War and Leave Behind have a similar effect for me.
In any case I find listening to the albums more often and familiarizing oneself with all its contents dilutes the established familiarity of what you're talking about with overplayed singles.
It works for me when I keep listening to new albums more and more after having heard the singles however many times up to the album's release.

not gonna lie, I had overplayed the first 3 songs too (especially WoWY) but when I finally gave this a full listen however many years ago, all those tracks just felt rejuvenated alongside the rest

idk streets and with or without you are still timeless to me but idk still haven’t found doesn’t really do much for me anymore
everything else tho. those fucking last three songs especially

I just skip the first three tracks and go from there, though I do return to them as live versions sometimes

the main melody in Mothers is goddamn incredible
shame the middle of this album dips so hard and fast

Well, as a chilean, Mothers is deeply emotional for me, but I think besides that is still a wonderful song
