older Nile rules, but i haven't heard his last few albums. i have yet to check out Vektor, i'm extremely suspicious of how high the avgs are for their three albums for a modern thrash band lol.
been listening to death metal and some metalcore, gorguts from wisdom to hate, dismember, breathing process, horse the band, and i usually do a song shuffle once a day on my ipod. been checking out stuff from all the dm lists lately

Duuuuuuudeeee jam Those Whom the Gods Detest by Nile, so chunky!
Vektor are essential thrash dude, have some sweet BM and prog metal vibes going for them and the riffs are OVER 9000!!!!
HORSE the Band dude yesssss, that's a righteous jam! Gorguts should be called GOATguts, they're the best.

i just tend to not trust ratings, sometimes i have weird opinions about things most people love with some genres, but i'm not as picky with metal because metal is just awesome. i've jammed a bit of Those Whom the Gods Detest, i'm not sure if i'm as down with it as Annihilation of the Wicked but it still sounds good. Gorguts are def the goat.

Gorguts are indeed the goat.
Check Vektor, though. Worst that happens is that you end up disliking it and you lose your friends, family, job, home, and respect from your peers as a result.

This almost sounds like a completely different genre to me (compared with other DM I've heard), is it just 'brutal DM' with vox that don't really sound DM?
Yes I'm a peasant, just trying to put my finger on it, this almost like grind levels of insanity, except I actually like it.

There's just something in that Canadian water. Cryptopsy are a technical death metal band, but don't fall into the same category of modern day tech death IMO. They are masters of that controlled chaos sound

I don't know what the specific subgenre is but yeah it is really damn unique. And agreed - I'm not a big grindcore guy at all, but I like those sprinkled little hints of grind in Cryptopsy.

Unique? Oh man, was hoping there was more stuff like this.

Here's some other killer tech death bands from Montreal
Maybe you'll dig Unhuman

Have you heard Quo Vadis - Defiant Imagination

Are Nile a different beast then? Brutal/technical/respected (or so I’ve heard).
Edit: thanks, will add them to my list
|

Nile is crap
Gotta agree with Unhuman, they are super over the top insane. Quo Vadis is sweet catchy and melodic tech death.
And don't forget to add Gorod and Augury to that list.

Oh yeah man, Augury are from Montreal too. What a scene. I haven't jammed Fragmentary Evidence in a while. Always found them a bit more atmospheric than their peers
|

New Augury album coming soon
|
| |
Ugh that album is pretty much a modern dm classic for me. Super technical, super prog, super atmospheric...
And how could I forget the bands Hieronymus Bosch and First Fragment
"New Augury album coming soon"
Omg I knooooow, I'm so excited. Been waiting for 9 years.
