"Sucking on his pipe, Distinguished accent."
Kind of sums up the whole album...the sucking part! ;)

Was definitely surprised to hear this. DT have been slipping for a while now but this is definitely the best album since Train of Thought imo.
Although I seem to not agree with people.. Count of Tuscany would be a brilliant song without the long winded keyboardscape in the middle - its simply too long for what it is. Needs more wankery.
But Nightmare to Remember and Shattered Fortress just clicked straight away, great great songs.
Why do DT have to deliver albums with at least one emo/whiny song on each album though... Best of Times and Wither are a little... ordinary?
Anyway, good album let down by a couple of meh moments.

Yeah good way to make it even worse. Better yet, they could have cut the length of that section a bit. I agree that The Shattered Fortress is amazing, definitley one of my favourite DT songs

Yeah exactly FoB. If it was either more interesting (Octovarium toed the line in its intro but it barely scraped over the interesting line) or just shorter Tuscany would probably be my fav song on the album. As it is, it slides in 3rd behind Fortress and then aNtR. Still a good song, but pity Im finding myself skipping through 4 minutes of it.
Overall, the album is still good - completely took me by surprise.

For the first fucking time ever, Dream Theater sounds inspired. They play songs! Portnoy dropped some of the instrumental masturbation, and Petrucci's lead work has more soul. Unfortunately, every song is coated with a thick layer of cheesiness, all of which leave a foul taste. I almost regurgitated when I heard "Whither".
Yeah, they don't suck. Yet.

So let's see..The Shattered Fortress is cheese? That means The Glass Prison has some cheese in it. That equals fail.

I quite like this album. As long as you don't take DT seriously (or as least as seriously as they do: know when they're being serious and when they're being silly), the music can be really fun to listen to. Portnoy is at the top of his game, the rhythms and fills are accessible certainly, but still quite innovative. As a keyboardist, I'm impressed by Rudess' mastery of his selection of synths. Some of the tones he's conjuring are pretty stunning. :D
First comment, btw.

hehe. Trust me, once you get to know pppl on sputnik you relax to one-liner comments that relate nothing to music ;)

I like turtles.

I think it's a pretty solid album, but not as good as Systematic Chaos. The biggest letdown for me on this album is the lyrics to Count of Tuscany. Great song, but the lyrics sound like they were written in about five minutes.

I like turtles.
A Quick Summary on Turtles:
Turtles are cold-blooded reptiles that have a crusted shell cemented on their back. There are over 300 species of turtles in the word, many of which are endangered due to hazardous difficulties. They are one of the oldest reptiles still living today, dating back to in literature, the egyptian ages, and in science 300 million years ago.
Who couldn't like 'em?

I don't like turtles. I hate turtles. Turtles are the worst.
I'm also meaning to get this; first exposure to Dream Theater.

Waior - if this is your first exposure, you should really check out Scenes From A Memory also. This album is good and all, but Scenes just rapes face.

I like "The Best of Times", especially the final part. The rest reflects the previous album.

Review and album are very good,
only minor point are the lyrics, nothing here comes even close to songs like 'In the name of God'
