i was surprised to hear them play so many songs from i'm only a man at cornerstone because i thought they were all about going back to their older sound. it was a good show nonetheless.

Here comes another Davey 1st impression. In a word: YES!
Good review roofi. I listened to both this & the Taking Back Sunday album for the first time on the same day & this was clearly the better album on 1st listen.
In the past, I've preferred to listen to only highlight tracks from Emery (a 'Best of' from them would be great). Yes, even 'The Question' for some reason. But this feels complete. There seems to be a theme running through it (even if it may "rely on the same bag of tricks" a little too often). This could be an album of the year contender for me.
A couple of points though: 'Cutthroat Collapse' is not better than 'Walls'. In fact, I'm not even sure it's the highlight track on here at present.
And also, I need to take a more thorough listen to the screaming. Without full concentration, too much of it was a little indecipherable. And I always prefer it to be understood. It may have been because I was enjoying everything else (melodies, music, etc...) a little too much though.

It's just a super dooper album Davey. I agree with you on 'Cutthrout Collapse' though I find either the title track or 'Churches and Serial Killiers' to be my favourite.

I've realized that I like The Question waaaaay more than this. It isn't even close. I'm trying pretty hard to like this as much, but it isn't happening.

nah, more like a safe 4.5. this is in between a 4 and 4.5 for me, hence the lower rating for the review

This is the first ever Emery album I listened to, and I find it there best.

I can't stop listening to this!!! Especially 'Churches & Serial Killers'. Definitely my album of the year so far.
I'd need to re-listen to 'The Question', but I rate this a little higher than that for consistency reasons. 'Walls' is still their best song however.
