I'm surprised you like Cries of the Past so much Rowan but hate this. I agree this is much less polished than their follow up but damn they aren't that much different

musically yeah maybe not but there are lightyears between them in quality

you've got some of the worst lyrics ever written on this album (Burden in Your Hands is particularly embarrassing but the hidden track where they lecture you about Jesus also knocks it down a point)

Dallas can't really scream yet and his lows in particular are pretty laughable here

even when the musicianship is good here they just string a bunch of disparate moments together with no transitions whatsoever (COTP admittedly does this too but is a lot cleverer about it, plus the songs are just better). This is just such a jarring listen not even the drum performance can save it, plus of course there's no Chris who is arguably the highlight of Cries

basically this shit sucks

i really, really hate this band's early shit. their last 2 are the only ones i can somewhat tolerate. i acknowledge that this style of music (especially in conjunction with the subject matter) just isn't my cup of tea, though.

How can you not like Define the Great Line tho

And to be fair the Jesus lyrics are generally at a minimum after the first two, DTGL forward had much more existential themes but have God sitting at the end of the journey. Disambiguation pretty much shed that entirely

i can't even really understand what he's saying so it's never bothered me too much ... i just like the cadence he's screaming it

i've been listening to this for more than 10 years and never looked up the lyrics tbh

few christ moments that stick out but yeah it just has never bothered me. i'm sure if i were to hear this for the first time now, i would not be as thrilled as i was in 8th grade! still super nostalgic though and has held up rather well (i actually listen to this way more than Cries of the Past)

Off topic but reading the first couple of pages of discussion reminded me of how absolutely retarded political debates were (still retarded but I think it's actually gotten less worse post Trump) in the late 2000s. Motherfuckerz thinkin Neo-cons were Evangelicals and not Jewish ex-Trotskyites.
