Dream Theater as an apotheosis of emotionally charged prog? Not so sure about that.

Personally, the emotionally detached and distant feel of the music is what makes it impactful to me.

Not even close. Dream

Theater is the apotheosis (maybe not the apotheosis, but certainly they're not emotionally charged) of cold, emotionless prog.

Even when their lyrics seem like they should be emotional they generally come off as contrived. Alder-era Fates Warning,

Menagerie, early Queensryche, occasional Pain of Salvation, Riverside... any of those would be better choices.

Who the fuck said Dream Theater was emotionless?

Easily one of the most emotional songs I've ever heard.

I said they were. Their "emotional" stuff comes off as contrived and forced (IMO), but it doesn't mean I don't like them.

Songs like Disappear, Vacant, and The Spirit Carries On feel purely emotional. It's a lot more evident when you know Vacant is about Labrie's mom's alzheimers. I know that they usually shoot for the more technically savvy approach, but when they want to be emotional they usually do pretty well imo.

They start to do well, but then they usually ruin the mood with useless extended musical parts (ok not useless, cause they're enjoyable, but they do ruin the mood). I'll say that "The Spirit Carries On" is the most emotional song they have, especially the closing part.

It's like Pain of Salvation on songs like "Trace of Blood" that are so emotional and then they bust out with this stupid funky guitar solo part that just ruins it.

I still don't see how this lacks emotion. It's a beautiful album. Adam's Murmer is stunning. This Message Edited On 02.02.09

but the technicality of the music actually passes you by somehow

Listen to it enough times and you won't miss a thing. Everything is right where it needs to be.

I find this review appalling, and completely missing the point of the album, especially with the "lack of emotional depth". I am no narrow minded person though, and I read this review to see WHY you gave it a 2.5. Its true, what some people take as a masterpiece others see as mediocre, but for me, this is one of my favorite albums ever.

People are allowed to miss the point of the album when they listen. It's not just him, see SylentEcho above, therefore his review is helpful for some people who don't quite like what they've heard. Oh, and the phrase "but for me" renders your first point useless; it's all down to opinion, and no opinion is right or wrong.
