"Digging My Own Grave" has slowly become one of my favorite Thrice songs. I used to not like it that much, but have slowly begun realizing it's jazzy genius

Earth is the strongest of the Index. Imo they should have cut a bunch of songs out and tried to make one amazing album. It certainly would have been possible with songs like Silver Wings, Flame Deluge, Daedalus and Child of Dust, then it wouldn't have been dragged down by songs like Milly Michaelson, or As the Crow Flys.

I didn't like earth all that much (or at least as much as the others) but the other 3 are equally great in my opinion. As a whole I'd say I like Vol I and II more.

Air>Fire>Earth>Water.

I don't really get much on Water except Night Diving and Digital Sea. Air is 5 territory and both Fire and Earth are 4.5/4.0.

When this first came out Water was my least favorite but I think i'd have to agree that it's my favorite now. Air is very close though, it's just not as consistent.
