february always finds you folding
local papers open to the faces
”passed away” to wonder what they're holding
in those hands we're never shown, the places

formal photographs refuse to mention
his tiny feet, that birthmark on her knee
the tyranny of framing our attention
with all the eyes their eyes no longer see

‘03 was a hell of a year eh? This, Meadowlands, Transatlanticism, Magnolia Electric Co and plenty other greats.

Sounds interesting, may add to the list. Also just remembered ‘03 has my favorite Drive-By Truckers album as well. You heard any of them Phero?

But yeah ‘03 is up there with ‘97, ‘98, ‘00, ‘02, and ‘13 for me. Roughly 1995-2005 in general was really the peak of indie though.

Hm, I like English Oceans but wouldn’t say it’s a great starting point. Their early 00s trilogy (Southern Rock Opera through The Dirty South) is classic. Not sure how up your alley they’d be but some of the country moments here indicate you could dig some of that kind of stuff (though they’re more southern rock for the most part).

here's a deep cut, alt version of Past Due from some compilation https://youtu.be/spPpuAAY0QU

I might prefer that outro to the slightly anticlimactic electronics on the album version ngl

At this rate all I’m going to listen to for the rest of the year is Samson/Weakerthans

I'm jealous tbh - I've always wished I could connect with this on the level of Left and Leaving

Still a phenomenal album obviously, near top 50 for me
