Oh, crikey, mate. I'm listening to this one right now. This thing is all meat and potatoes. It's like a can of 'Chunky'. The soup that eats like a meal. Does this drummer win many readers' polls and awards and schitt? Because this cat can flarkin play like a behemoth. He's an outright monster. I can adjust my stereo to isolate his kit and the guy's got all these crazy fills that appear to be almost be Jazz-inspired. This cat should be an object lesson to all that sit behind a set of drums.

I knew that my ear was still pretty good. When you get a drummer that is well versed in a whole bunch of different disciplines it gives the music a much more multi-dimensional flavor. You can even have a guitarist who basically just plays power chords, as long as the drummer and bassist are really busy and highly nuanced in their delivery, and you'll still have something really interesting. Look at early Sabbath. Both the guitarist and bassist were really basic in their riffing, but Bill Ward fills up all the empty space with his highly nuanced drumming. A good drummer elevates the level of play for everyone.

I only recently got into Mastodon, and this is wonderful. Should I check out their newest album?

Sweet, I will get it then.
Personally, I love the vocalist for this band. He has plenty of variety with vocal stylings. This Message Edited On 07.23.08

This is some excellent stuff...i have blood mountain and it's a great album but i needed to be in a mood for it to truly like it...this, however, is hitting me like bam bam in a fruity pebbles commercial.
Naked Burn is playing rigt now and it's soooo good...Iron Tusk and Seabeast, especially the amazing ending, are also quite good...Aqua Dementia hits the face with super duperness...I am now a true believer...and the drums are mind-blowing though i've always been prone to liking those referred to as "over-players"

I got into Mastodon from the stuff on Blood Mountain, e.g. "Colony of Birchmen" and "Sleeping Giant," and when I picked up this album at first I thought it was okay, but not great. After about 10 listens I thoroughly enjoyed the album, though with Blood Mountain it only took me about 2 or 3.
