I guess my overall point (have we lost that?) is that BTBAM have similar qualities to my aforementioned bands (genre omitted), but they fail to execute as well.

Well...our album ratings are not too far apart, so I guess we don't disagree too much.

I think Altmer is trying to become hyperboleking with this review.

Guys, Genres are not suppose to be exact, Genres are just made for, so you kinda know what kinda of music your listening compared to other bands that play like or not like.

the word "progressive" is pretty useless anyway. say it to me, and i think of Tool, Pink Floyd, The End, Mastodon, Muse, and Opeth, among MANY others. And those bands hardly share a particular sound.
Personally, I couldn't give two shits whether or not something is "progressive" or not, just whether or not it's good.
Which is album is. In fucking spades.

Progressive, IMO, isn't about sharing a "sound," it's about being unique. They take a refined genre (death metal, sludge metal, alt rock, etc.) and they add a certain twist to it (though I wouldn't say Mastodon is necessarily progressive).

I tend to like bands labeled as progressive, but arguing about what's prog and what's not is one of the most annoying things ever.

Muse?? why
Because they're good and they are progressive?

Not really progressive, but good yes.

Well, kind of progressive.

altmer is so narrow minded
if it doesn't have catchy riffs and catchy choruses and isn't gay power metal, it isn't good!

Dude, you listen to bands like Nightwish and Kamelot, and you say Between The Buried And Me are bad? This fact alone makes this review a damn joke. Just keep it to yourself if you want to review an album from a genre you clearly know nothing about.
Time to give this album another well-deserved listen.

man, harsh review. I, however, disagree completely. the musicianship in this album alone earns a solid 3.5. and the redneck party in "ants in the sky" bumps it to a 4.5. Im kidding about the last part but seriously man, BTBAM owns.

I can name Nightwish and Kamelot songs that wreck anything on this album, dont even try to use that as criticism on him

Ok, I relistened to this album and I still don't love it (and think the vocals and breaks are awkward yadda yadda yadda). It's still a messy album, but the rating is going up.

I knew that there had to be SOMETHING that you could find good in this album. I don't mind people thinking this is a 2 cuz not everyone is going to love it, but giving this a 1 is just being stupid (no offense to those who did).
Just out of curiosity, what is your rating of Alaska?
Edit: Just noticed that u changed the rating in your review too.. imo that is a wrong thing to do cuz now the rating is too high for the review, 1.5 was perfect... just read ur summary/tagline and u can see it is nor describing a 2.This Message Edited On 10.16.07
