I agree totally. the thing with this is because some old fans are stuck to their old sound and just want them to keep playing the same emo chorus over and over. I personally think this is grown up songwriting and clearly an evolution from what were kind of stuck to. The album that follows this is even better in that way.

YCBY edges them a little for me simply because of how much nostalgic value it has, but versions and tropic rot are fantastic albums too. these guys really had a cool thing going and I would love to hear new stuff from them although I'm not holding my breath exactly.

my brother prefers that one as well. it's essentially hellish surf rock in the best possible ways of interpreting those two descriptors.

the melodics on the vocals are just awesome on that one and it always give me a nice foo fighters vibe to it yk, without actually copy them.

they borrow a lot from black metal in their melodic writing which is very cool. lot's of odd minor progressions that keep it interesting. it's one of the things I've always really loved about this band.

Sputnik really had the worst fucking opinions of this record ever when it came out, the average deserves to be higher. To me this easily stands with You Come Before You and Tropic Rot as their best work, to this day there isn't another post-hardcore record that sounds anything like it. I'm glad people are finally appreciating it.

lol both its reviews are 4s
really wish i could get into this. adore this band and also think their insistence on evolving so rapidly with each album was part of what made them so compelling (kinda what separates a good band from a special band to me these days) but this ones never really sat right with me until the closing stretch
