I certainly prefer Paranoid to H&H, but really love them both.

Thats exactly why I prefer the first 6 to any Dio album. H&H and Mob Rules aren't that far behind though and still awesome albums in their own right. Its kind of like Burn and Stormbringer not being as good as In Rock, Fireball or Machine Head.
I'd personally put H&H above Sabotage and maybe Vol. 4 as well, but I completely agree with your thinking here really. Love that comparison to Deep Purple, makes so much sense.

I definitely prefer all the first 6 Ozzy-era albums to anything they did with Dio.
|
| |
Every time I listen to a track from Heaven and Hell all I can really think of is how much better and atmospheric it would be if Ozzy was in it
I just can't buy into the doomy vibes with Dio's singing at all

H&H doesnt really have much doomy vibes. Its more a straight up metal album.
|
| |
It has admittedly been a while since I've heard it but I remember the title track having doom vibes

feels more like a Dio album than a Sabbath one in a lot of ways. and not just cause of the vocals

Its Holy Diver with better guitar work

pretty much

I guess you can look at it that way and maybe my expectations were misguided but the doom aspect of this band has always been one of my favorite aspects about them so to have it go away is bittersweet for me even if generally the band is still tight

Yeah but even on the last few Ozzy albums there wasnt much doom.
Anyway I still consider H&H just as much a Sabbath album as any other since Iommi still wrote pretty
much all of the music for it. Obviously since Dio is a completely different style of vocalist compared
to Ozzy the music had to fit that and it does perfectly.

well doom is generally better than regular ol' heavy metal so i get that
plus no one dooms like sabbath. no one

On Holy Diver, Dio is at the very top on his game though.

Agreed

I've never been able to get into Holy Diver, maybe I need to be more persistent.

You're not the only one, Danny. It's a great album, though.

Gotta disagree Nero. While I do prefer Sabbath's first 6 to their first 2
with Dio as well, I wouldn't apply that reasoning to DP. For me, Burn is
as classic a DP album as the first 3 Mk. II Era albums are. It's also
arguably better than WDWTWA.
|

I'll admit that Stormbringer and CttB aren't quite on that level tho, but there's certainly more to DP than just the first 3 Mk. II albums imo.
