Sabbath, AC/DC, some early Scorps, some Pink floyd, Led Zep, Motorhead, those were the bands that taught me how to play. You should definitely try to pick up the guitar. It's a fantastic, very rewarding instrument. Very easy to learn the basics at, but very tough to master. But I can assure you, you don't have to be a master to learn to play some early proto-metal stuff.
