Yeah, the r word is used in a similar way to the n and f word meant to disparage people in the same way, it just hasn't been ingrained in the cultural concious in the way the n word had and the f word still is. A lot of it is just being self aware in a way which you use the word. So many people take it as policing their language when it's really just basic manners.

The last time I felt overwhelmingly compelled to use the r word was when I was ranting about my landlord. It had been several years before that. I’ve never used it to describe someone with actual mental deficits. That’s not really an excuse, it’s just interesting to see how different the connotations for certain words are. I know people use excuses to say the n word or f word without it being targeted toward Black or gay people, but it’s still used by racists and homophobes more often than not if it’s being used as an insult. When someone says the r word, I do cringe, but I know that they are really just using it as a placeholder for someone that they intensely dislike.

It’s crazy how few people actually know the etymology of the word retard, or that even less than a century ago words like “moron” and “imbecile” and “idiot” were used in a psychiatric context to diagnose people who were mentally disabled. And those words today still more or less mean the same thing as “retard”, yet only that word is offensive while you can call someone an idiot or a moron without anyone batting an eye. Why? Because people have arbitrarily decided the r word is a big no no word. It doesn’t matter that other words basically mean the exact same thing, a large enough group of people decided one word would be taboo and if you disagree, you’re an ableist.

I mean, there are people that make the argument that those words should be treated as slurs as well. There are more than a few racial slurs that are also typically viewed as only being used by racists, so the words you list there could be treated the same as the r word over a long enough timeline.

@gyromania

Yes that's how language evolves my dude. Most words that are considered offensive now weren't always that way

They should be slurs if the r word is, right? Otherwise it’s a double standard. Like that pizza dude telling me I’m dumb as rocks, isn’t that much different from calling someone a retard, you’re insulting their intelligence, but that won’t stop him from taking the moral high ground regardless. People like to act more on feeling than logic, which is why we’ve arrived here. And as for the f word (and this applies to most of these bad words), it’s phonetics that makes them so overused. Just like when you call someone a mother fucker, you don’t literally mean they fuck mothers, it’s just a universally used insult and “fuck” is just fun to say. Same with fa**ot. Of all the kids who said that word in grade school and high school I can prob count on one hand the times it was used to disparage actual homosexuals.

Eak: that’s not evolution, it’s stupidity. It’s literally just flipping the switch and saying “actually yeah this is fine now, let’s use this word which means the same thing as those other words, and if you use it, you’re a bigot” context doesn’t mean shit to most people who pretend to get offended by this shit lol
