might have to 5 this
this is as effortless and real as it gets for an artist and especially for Lana
All of the songs are extremely memorable and beautifully arranged and sung
also completely agree with Sowing's points from the last page

i personally wouldn't call lana "insightful" but unless you're reading philosophy you're probably not getting original thought. i think NFR just articulates a certain sense of loss and detachment and regret really well. it's like enjoying a particular iteration of the hero's journey because it really vibes with you even if you are aware that you just watched star wars for the 100th time.
i can see why this wouldn't be up someone's alley tbh, my issue here was with that obnoxious sputnik ironic detachment which feels hella juvenile now that i'm not (close to) a teen anymore

Now I'm curious to know who you'd call insightful.

carlin did at least occasionaly have something observant to say that wasnt observant in the hacky shithead comedian 'everybody gets so offended these days' way

music is for confirming emotional truths, and in my (observed) experience is not much good for recognising anything new in the world that you haven't already noticed on some level yourself (to which end i do get why this album is a doomer classic for so many, but i also dislike its romanticised opulent Big Zany Cinematic American Aesthetic trappings all the more for it). but yeah, not sure musicians (in that guise) have ever been the best people to look to for insight

It's not easy to say who you find insightful is it?

it's so possible to list insightful (on some level) people that it seems like an asinine chore, and in that sense is not easy no.
the author of the last book i read was insightful. a handful of my good friends are insightful. some members of my extended family are insightful. gandhi was insightful. go figure

my optician insightful

enter shikaris political lyrics
=insightful

does the spiritual facet of music (where applicable) fall under insight?
|
| |
i would call that more of a catalyst/facilitator for the way people engage with it. i think music can be an insight into its creator or their circumstances (lol Brand New) but idk if it has any inherent 'insight' beyond that
more ontological commentary on music from mort plz

eyesight gives us a standard of perception that we assume to share. that is, if i point at some grass and say the grass is green, the other people know what i mean. they share the same perception. this is because on average people share the same quality of eyesight and arent colour blind etc.
however, this means there are actually several conditions needed for us to share the same perception. That is, grass appears a certain shade of green under THIS light condition, with THIS quality of eyesight, relating to THIS wavelength or whatever
similarly, a claim could be made about artistic perception, that is that we share perceptions based on certain conditions and DISPOSITIONS. This would help explain taste. For example, its certainly true that the music we are brought up hearing affects the music we enjoy later in life. You could say someone is DISPOSED to enjoying a particular metal track if certain conditions have been met (a familarity with rock/metal music, a particular immediate emotional state of being that disposes us to enjoying that track which would be particular to the track of course, and so on)
this could also help explain ethical decision making
ive also partly butchered it and an actual philosopher would be crying because of how specific and pedantic they all are but you get the general gist of it
ontologically this would make value judgements dependant on DISPOSITIONS
|
| |
so if insight is something that we ascribe to someone who makes particularly precise observations of something that we perceive under the same conditions, and personal dispositions are a key factor in how perceive music, then it's fair to say that 1) music itself isn't necessarily any more or less insightful than grass, no matter how insightful the creator and 2) any insight we do glean through music is ultimately a product of our disposition?

One of the problems is that if you find an artist insightful, you will likely receive ridicule for it (could just be me, but I'm pretty sure I've seen it with other people).
So we're hesitant to share.
