Blood Mountain is equal in glory with all the other three first Mastodon albums. For me, though, there's no mediocre album they've made, I still play regularly OMRTS and The Hunter was so spazzy, random and instinctive that wins me every time.

Personally BM is my favorite and I never felt any competition from the rest. I find it very tight and memorable in its eccentricity. For instance 2:25 into The Wolf Is Loose was engraved in my head instantly on first listen. There are a couple songs I don't always return to but imo at least half of it is definitely their best material, like This Mortal Soil which is my favorite song of theirs.
I can see why it's criticized for being "too prog metal" though

I don't like BM that much, but yep Mortal Soil is one of my favourites from the band too. That verse riff ugh

"At least admit that the opening to The Wolf Is Loose is one of the most badass Mastodon moments ever and I'll leave you alone"

I can't make a fair comparison, as I have only heard each release once, but the EP really highlights Brent. I think he is the only one who sings on it, unless my memory is shite. The guitar work is great and the songs are super catchy. None of that overly long crap.

I'm hearing a fair bit of Brann and Troy but yeah the guitar work and everything is pure Brent, which is ideal since he's the best thing about the band now

Definitely check it if you dig their spacey shit, like pendulous skin/most of CtS. It still sounds like modern Mastodon though
