The music and riffs aren't bad; it's really the weak production (again), mostly lame lyrics, and retarded album cover that ruin this. Watch the "What if Moth into Flame was recorded on Justice" video on youtube...rips pretty hard and sounds way better.
In sum, the ideas are there, they're just not executing very well. Again.

"Why are people still talking about this album"
More interesting question: Why are people giving this a 4.0 or better? lol
A moth into the flaaaame...yeah right. I didn't think he could do as bad as Frantic but here he is again haha :D
And yeah, they have ideas. They have musical talent (well except Ulrich ofc), else they'd never have made it that far...but they don't know how to write songs.
Mustaine and Burton helped them make metallica what it is. Without any of them and with the initial drive gone, they can't make even an average record. That's too bad but that's how it is.

For some reason my friend's significant other likes this album, and she said she doesn't like music in English.

It's an okay record. People are giving it a high rating because of nostalgia, but mostly because they are convincing themselves this album was worth the wait. Fans so desperately wanted Metallica to release a top tier album that they are convincing themselves "Hardwired... to Self-Destruct" is a revolutionary effort by a modern classic. Whether or not fans wanted to take that leap of faith is up to them, but there isn't much on this album aside from experimentation. There are some decent songs on the record, but nothing that is noteworthy. I can't say it is what we asked for, nor is it worth the wait, but it is an okay record nonetheless. The primary issue with "Hardwired... to Self-Destruct" is that the album doesn't advance nor delay the band in any way. It's simply there just because.

The last concert they streamed had four (or five?) songs from this album. When's the last time they had an album that was good enough to actually dominate their setlist?

My rating definitely isn't based on nostalgia. The last Metallica album I have rated over a 3 was from back in 1991.

tbh I'm positive all of their new album tours featured setlists heavily dominated by their newest album. I remember the 2008 Death Magnetic concert in Houston had like 5 or 6 DM songs
It's nothing new

What the fuck- that is a painful setlist. I would've been annoyed had I paid to go to that concert.
