ok, this has obnoxious song-writing, sounds unnecessarily obtuse & 'wonky' has genuinely cringe-worthy moments (like the warped vox on the closing track, although that track is so pointless & long that's probably too nondescript, as it happens at least 582 times).
Having said that, it has moments of tranquil & almost random pleasantness, in a nice background music sort of way. Mainly complete bobbins though.

oh damn...I agree with you on that last track but wasn't expecting that rating tbh (in fact is making me reconsider my rating) X) sorry to rec you this one. I honestly thought you'd like even more than Illinois

I'm nothing if not unpredictable, haha. Don't worry, I was checking this regardless anyway.

This is as bombastic as Carrie & Lowell is subdued. I still slightly prefer this one, though both are brilliant imo.

Is it weird that I associate Impossible Soul with the holiday season and break it out every Thanksgiving and play it nonstop until the new year?

I mean a little weird considering Sufjan has an extended holiday season catalogue of songs lol

Oh I listen to those too just closer to Christmas
Not that anyone cares but I think the reason for it is that in 2010 I didn't hear Age of Adz until November, and then I subtly associate Sufjan's voice with the holidays because of said extensive holiday catalogue
Either way, I can already feel myself gravitating towards this again and it's still October

I've been thinking for a while about making an involved list w/ descriptions of my top 25 songs of all time, but I can't bring myself to put in the effort (or even find the time). But if I did, Impossible Soul would be near the top of that list.

Years later and I still haven’t heard this one (or the pre-Illinois albums)

If you liked Illinois, Michigan is a must. As for this one, it's hard to figure out if someone would like it or not beforehand. It's completely different from his other solo stuff, that's for sure. Planetarium is kinda close to this in parts, but that's about it.

I've heard some of his electronic stuff via the Christmas albums, the Carrie and Lowell live, and Planetarium and find them generally enjoyable but by far my favorite thing I've heard by him is Carrie and Lowell.

Seven Swans goes down that folky, minimalistic road - well, not as minimalistic as Carrie and Lowell and certainly not as personal, but if that's the kind of Sufjan you're looking for, it's your go-to. Like with Illinois, there's also plenty of folky stuff on Michigan (like Romulus) between the more determined and pompous songs, although Michigan definitely leans more towards the folky side in comparison to Illinois which is more on the orchestral-overblown side of Sufjan ...
He played two songs of this on Carrie and Lowell Live, but one of them is Futile Devices and not really representative for its sound. But you should be more or less prepared for this one's sound if you heard Planetarium. It's way wackier though.

This is the exact opposite of Carrie and Lowell...other than the first minute and the last minute. I'm one of very few people who might give this a tiny nod over C&L, but I love Sufjan at his most indulgent.
Seven Swans is also fantastic and probably the most underrated/overlooked album in his discog.

I'd say The BQE is his most overlooked work because it's lost somewhere in the compilations section.
