To me Kyuss was always like "Sabbath being played in the desert"

I always regarded them as a metal-leaning band myself

They're more rock than metal, imo. Sleep, for the most part, is the american metal version of stoner music.

Yeah, I view Kyuss as more of a hard rock band. The riffs are pretty fuckin metal, but the overall vibe presented in the music just isn't quite intense enough to be labeled as metal. I can lay back and chill with a joint and listen to Kyuss, wheras metal just makes me want to smash my head through a wall.

^ You should check Motorpshycho, Orange Goblin & Monster Magnet, if you haven't. Same mood and attitude but different approach.

I've only started listening to Motorpshycho and they're a ridiculously good band, so experimental, you never know what their next song might sound like.

As for Kyuss, what can anyone say that hasn't be said already? they're totally in a league of their own. To this day i haven't listen to any QOTSA albums simply because I'm afraid I"ll be disappointed.

I think it's all in the eye of the beholder. See, Monster Magnet and QotSA are 100% rock bands to me. Kyuss and Orange Goblin on the other hand have plenty of metallic influences and their riffs are a fair bit more crushing afaic.

I was the same way for awhile, but I finally listened to the first three qotsa records and all were amazing
