Descending is peak, tbh I can’t think of another album that’s so back heavy. I hate the synths on Chocolate Chip Trip but it’s def a sick drum solo, and Culling Voices + Tempest make for a strong finish. Title track is pretty basic for them but still solid. I’ve grown to fucking hate most of Pneuma, such a plodding and forgettable song and I really have no idea why so many fans love it. Invincible is fine but I could nitpick the fuck out of that song too. There’s no reason for a song with 6-7 mins of good ideas to be 13 fucking minutes long. All of the interludes are stupid.
But that still leaves 3 amazing songs that add up to over half the album, sooooooo…

I think invincible is great. Kinda agree about pneuma even though i like it, and i like the title track. I think temp3st is weak tho. And culling voices isn't finished.
Descending live with the added vocals before the drop made that song click so much more.

Descending and Invincible top tier, esp the former.
Pneuma is great but feels a little like generic Tool. T-t is good, but as an opener, it can’t hold a candle to the grudge, stinkfist and vicarious.

look as long as we can agree on Descending I won’t argue with anyone, legit might be my favorite Tool track. For sure the most passionate Maynard sounds on the entire album and really is the only song here that I think has absolutely zero filler. I dunno, the open chord chugging on Invincible felt kinda boring but with Descending it just works a lot better for me. I’m sure there’s some music theory reason for that but I guess it just feels like more momentum building? And the payoff is absolutely worth it for me.

It’s definitely up there for me. Lateralus, The Grudge, Aenima, Third Eye and Jambi top it for me off the top of my head, but it’s right up there with their best shit fo sho.

I think, out of those at least, I’d only put Third Eye ahead of it… when thinking about their discog as a whole, if I really took a minute to think about, like im jamming them for the first time in a WHILE rn, I personally think H. is ahead of it as well
I haven’t gotten back to Lateralus or 10,000 Days yet but I don’t think there’s anything of either that I’d rank that highly either. But maybe im wrong, it’s been a long ass time since I’ve listened to any Tool at all. I do know that when I was younger I much preferred their weirder stuff on the latter two records, but as I’ve gotten older I really think Aenima is their best work.

Right in Two has grown on me massively as I’ve gotten older though, very much looking forward to hearing that song again. And it’s literally probably been a fuckin decade since I’ve actually listened to the whole thing and heard it in the context of the record.
I still maintain that Aenima is damn near perfect but those interludes really just don’t work for me. I think really only Useful Idiot and Intermission are the only worthwhile ones, the rest feels like padding, which already unnecessary, the albums already long as shit lol

I share these sentiments, especially the issues with extending these songs by nearly twice their length with instrumental jam sessions that do nothing but replay the same riff over and over at a slightly reduced tempo. Was just listening to Invincible and that song has like 3 opportunities to end and it just keeps going.
And Pneuma got long in the tooth fast. Doesn't help that it feels like a song that builds to absolutely nothing. You hit 9:20 when that riff picks up and you're starting to tap your foot thinking, "okay we're going somewhere" and then it's just the chorus repeated followed by another minute-long instrumental outro.

Yeah Right in Two is great, lowkey a 10k Days highlight.
Lateralus is my favorite Tool album. I saw them live on that tour 7 or 8 times and those were some of the most incredible shows I’ve ever been to. Was on psychedelics at most of them too but, that was kinda the point too!

The lyrics of fear inoculum aged great. It's almost as if Maynard knew.

That next album needs to try and hurry and get here sometime within the next couple years. It's been 7 years already since this one.

Are we really that hyped for another album? No one ever seems to be all that excited for it.

Who's no one lol ? Im sure the large majority of the tool fanbase would load In there pants when tool announces a album and puts out a single. I'd bet my car on that
I don't know where your getting this idea from lol

My favorite of them is 10,000 Days, and to me, this feels like that but drawn out and lacking the energy. I like it, generally. But god it’s long. I hope whatever they do next has some urgency to it.

Has anyone listened to MTVoid or Legends of Seagullmen? I was about to comment why the other 3 musicians never do any side project stuff and I read that Danny Carey mainly does guest spots as well as the Legends of Seagullmen supergroup (although it looks like they only released one album). Chancellor is part of MTVoid and they've released 2 albums. I've not listened to any of it and didn't know if people here had an opinion.
I wish those 3 would just do their own thing since I feel like they have such good chemistry and are just shackled by whatever contract they've signed so they only jam for TOOL tracks.
