Ya I think chino realized his screams didn’t sound so great on Ohms and went for a mellower performance on this… which is great. This is the best he’s sounded since Diamond Eyes/Koi

That said, I loved Gore and Ohms but this is definitely better… I thought he already was sober but getting sober was definitely good for him. The whole band sounds more inspired tbh.
I fucking hate that I have personal hangups with this record because I really do love it. Probably my fourth favorite behind Koi, White Pony, and SNW.
Idk, the older I get the more I like their mellower tunes, this album wouldn’t have hit the same if they dropped it when I was younger, I like that chino isn’t screaming as much. His vocal melodies sound more thought out to me.

I miss his screams.
I found myself feeling like this record was too low for me at times.
Like, give me a scream now and then. Guess I am in the minority since Diamond Eyes is one of my least favourites.

Sad this isn't exciting me as much as Ohms did on my first listens.
Will probably end up a 3-3.5 at this rate.

Band really can do no wrong. At one point I really thought Ohms was their last record… hopefully they can get a quicker turnaround with the next LP because they ain’t getting any younger.
I still have hope we’ll get Eros, or at least the songs we do have will get properly mixed and released as singles.

Sludgy, Proggy, intense and one hell of a ride. I'm not surprised that Deftones is becoming more popular; their discography is too damn awesome to not be recognized.

Error is one of the worst Deftones songs ever. Also, Chino is 52 and struggles live sometimes as it is. He was really stretching his screaming ability with Genesis and really, he's never been particularly great screaming live. There were times during the fat Chino era but he destroyed his voice in those days.

What's interesting is that Chino did a lot of the initial guitar writing for this record before Carpenter took the reins. From my point of view, I think Carpenter is the reason why things take so long because he limits himself in how often and how far he can travel to jam and develop ideas with the band, although I'm pretty sure they just share stems through email at this point rather than actually developing ideas in the studio.
As far as Chino's voice is concerned, we can only wish for time travel so someone can go back to 1995 and tell Chino to train his voice rather than abuse the fuck out of it.

At least probably only a couple more worthwhile records before they just become a geriatric legacy act
