i have had conversations with people currently signed to fairly big independent metal labels who have made the claim that this band is basically all marketing behind the scenes.

I had never heard any studio stuff until late 2024. Thought they were cool when they opened for Cannibal Corpse/Gorguts but studio stuff didn't do much for me

MERCHCORE

i have seen them live. I own a shirt and hidden history on wax. They are a good band and definitely good musicians I just don’t really see what sets them apart from any of the other bands doing music like this well.

They sound envious to me, but idk what the tone of those conversations have been like
At any rate, I’m not sure blood incantation would deny such a claim. They market themselves and their music heavily. I’m not sure I see the point of getting down in the weeds about this. Group A is going to call them sellouts, group B is going to call them genius. The marketing isn’t some conspiracy. It’s very purposeful. They are not hiding it.
Now, say it with me: Closed mouths don’t get fed

merchcore (3) lol
hmm, but yeah seriously I liked this band a lot more back in the Starspawn days but they’re still producing solid stuff, it’s just not as much my bag now
Honestly as much I appreciate a good shitpost I think the marketing shtick is overstated by this point… like, so what? It gets brought up a disproportionate amount to me. Why wouldn’t you want to market your product? Some bands get luckier than others with the hand their dealt (i.e. the platform they have) but I wouldn’t hold it against them. If their music didn’t appeal to enough people none of that stuff would matter. Their sound is pretty accessible, technical yet ‘fun’ and speaks to prog lovers, or those who find straight DM homogenous or too relentless (or what have you). It clearly does appeal to those who’re big on DM too, but they’ve widened the net

Sanguisugabogg are the superior merchcore band (-;

it just feels like marketing is meant to drive consumption more than anything else.
a things value exists beyond quantifying how much or how little it was consumed.
