"Daron stealing the spotlight and ramping up his contributions to their sound"
Didn't Serj basically want to leave after STA tho? A lot of Mesmerise/Hypnotise comes off as Daron trying to keep the band together more than him trying to hog the spotlight to me. My impression is that Serj was checked out emotionally at that point, and Daron tried to pick up the slack

yeah I think that’s the consensus at this point. ive always heard that serj just wasn’t interested in heavy music anymore and wanted to work on other stuff.

"daron singing = bad" is to music what "classic doom's super shotgun = bad" is to video games
i.e. a completely batshit take that nobody who likes the thing in question actually believes, but some very vocal minority repeated often enough for it to become a meme that we all have to argue about even though we don't know why
band objectively works amazingly with two vocalists

this album feels like music by the insane for the insane, I'm still amazed at the absolute weirdness and unique atmosphere they created here. really one of the best metal albums of that generation

I liked the s/t quirky with the tubas in Peephole
I didn't like the Mezmerize quirky with the accordions in Radio/Video

toxicity rules but I love the unhinged acid-addled energy on this. Suggestions is maybe my fave song they've ever done, they packed so much into 3 minutes with that one
