Album is dumber than people that critique reviews yet have mistakes in their reviews

critiquing any review should come from the standpoint that all work is open to improvement, so all i'm seeing here is salty pizza

"while i don’t 100% agree that everything profound is left to implication, i think they do illustrate why 95% of metal lyrics + Are You Really Okay and whatever else on this record are such trite bs"
see, i think that's where i'm not understanding, because the idea that like, a direct sense of earnestness is inherently trite, would then possibly disqualify 99% of emo lyrics too? not everything NEEDS to be steeped in so many metaphors that deciphering the meaning needs to be a chore in itself. that's probably where you somewhat disagree too since you said you don't fully agree.
show don't tell, sure, but i don't think being direct and to the point should be viewed as a negative. it's really all about how its delivered for me more than the actual lines themselves.
let's take a look at some waves ablaze lyrics from me:
Pull me off this ledge if you want me alive
This isn’t how I envisioned trying to survive
Pull me out as my heart begins to flatline
I am one with the earth, and I am dead inside
Stagnation killing me slowly, but I’m not afraid to die
Sedation taking over, comatose in my own mind
are these too "trite" for instance? they're on the nose about how, at the time of writing it, feeling like I'm moving in slow motion and not really doing much was messing with me.

Now you're starting to get it!

Tbh most musicians are shit lyricists, I could probably count on my fingers the number of acts going right now that actually have genuinely well written lyrics

Can't we all just agree that the fact that atoms somehow spontaneously came together unsupervised and took billions of years to somehow intentionally manipulate sound into a structured way that causes positive feelings in the brain of the organism that made it is pretty fucking whack and that rules. Been enjoying this album quite a lot, I think Aqua Regia and Rain are the standouts at this point. Maybe I'm just high y'all, love you.

@porc: well no, direct earnestness feels a lot more natural than forcing myself to throw every metaphor in the book to make myself seem deeper and more profound. if i'm writing about something like, say, trauma from being emotionally abused in the family, is it more effective to sweeten up every line with metaphors to make it harder to decipher or to just say fuck you to the person I'm writing about? My moneys on the fuck you. It gets to the point, doesn't mess around, it just straight up calls out the person that it's about and for me that's more earnest and I'm a lot more receptive of that than any pretentious attempt at looking "smart."

You know not every piece of writing that isn't just blunt force stating what it's feeling is steeped in metaphor, right?

It's definitely better than being intentionally vague. If I'm writing about how my father went from being a narcissist...to a narcissist with a religious sheen to make him seem "righteous", wouldn't it make sense to bring religious imagery in as a way to convey my frustration, for example?

Yeah, but you see a concept isn't inherently well or poorly written. Like, taking your base up there, I could write:
"Cross on the wall,
Jesus got him by the balls
I cried for his sins
But his faith makes a thick skin"
Doesn't make it good. That would be a very bad lyric. I know that isn't what you wrote about that concept, but the fact that you have the concept and the thought to bring a little religious imagery isn't anything at all, it's the way it's incorporated

@Koris: What's the point in being vague? To make me seem "smarter"?
@porc: i mean yeah those lyrics are shit but at the same time, take a look at Kaonashi's lyrics on their latest song - direct and to the point and the only metaphor is straight at the end. Peter delivers them with such an emotional honesty though that it's really hard to not get invested in the feeling because it feels REAL.
