"the calm section of Dracul Gras is definitely probably my favorite musical moment of the year so far"
dude for real. This and p4 had some moments that I just can't help but fucking belt no matter where I am.

I feel like I should drop this to a 4, but it just feels so good listening to it.

think i've settled on this being a mid-tier p album
first three tracks and zagreus are some of their best songs. nobuo is also pretty great but prob their worst closer. not as hot on dracul gras as everyone else but still very very good.
its the middle three tracks that sorta sink this for me. everything's fine is kinda boring once you get past the laser noises... really don't feel like it earns that "eyeless" style ending either. silhouette is fine for what it is but obv not really needed here, or really ever warrants a listen outside of a full album playthrough. dying star is fine but feels like it coulda been cut in half? couple that with all the bullshit orchestral outros and yeah pretty fun but certainly flawed album
p4 > jugg > p2 > p5 > p1 > p3

Problem with this album for me is that it's just Periphery being Periphery. P3 had a similar issue but I digged quite a lot of the melodies on that. P4 was saved by a stellar opening track, and a generally tighter sound. This feels proggier in the grand scheme of things, but nothing surprises me.
I also get that there are a few "callbacks" to previous material, but to me it just feels like they've ran out of ideas? They've proven that they can shake up the formula with Juggernauts, which is great in my opinion. I really hope they spice things up for their next project. That being said I haven't revisited this since it first came out, which honestly, backs up my feelings on this.

Saying Periphery running out of ideas seems a bit of a stretch. If they can make something like Juggernaut and all of these other projects, then clearly they can do something new. Also, this vibe is far different from any other P album I've listened to

I dunno, I honestly feel like I've heard it all before. It's like they've gone "Hey remember this song? Let's try that again and make it a bit proggier". It's getting a bit stale for me. Juggernauts was full of surprises for the time, and more cohesive overall. Periphery are definitely going through the motions here.

The first 3 tracks are setting the bar too high for the rest of the album, especially when the middle is so... middling.
