hyimw is also good smh night song is prob her best song to me
this and julia holter are barely comparable though tbh
|
| |
hyimw blows outside of a couple of songs but yeah how the hell did she come up lol

Album Rating: 5.0
hyimw is her best work
she came up because she generally fits into the sad indie songwriter category albeit a bit more ambient/abstract than all these acoustic artists

hope she sees this bro
|

i'm not sure how representative it is to throw her into the 'sad indie' ballpark tbh
'frequently melancholic baroque pop' is as far as it'll go, but even that is a different lingo

How is frequently melancholic any different than sad

Baroque pop isn't a far cry from indie either lol

Although indie shouldn't really be a genre so
I digress
|

"sad" in this thread implies that julia holter is as much of an incorrigible downer as phoebe/julien, which is unfair because her music represents a healthy range of other qualities
and baroque pop has a different set of tropes
|
| |
phoebe is about as far away from whatever holter is as it gets
|

shhh sowing!

sad is as much of a descriptor of what something sounds like as indie is, both are dum

The types of tropes that people who have heard Pet Sounds might know about
|
| |
1) exclusively looking at music through tropes, to the point where you begin ignoring the individual aspects that make an album unique. Especially when people say "how do you like X but not Y? they have the same tropes" as if every album with the same tropes is the same. Or sometimes people get into these long debates about what tropes an album has. "You know that album you think is rap? Well, actually, as a matter of fact, it is pop/r&b. I heard at least one catchy melody in there it's not rap." Or people who debate which of 77 subtropicals a metal album retires under. Who cares, just talk about it for what it is instead of having to place everything in these broad categories.
