i meant to say without saying that solos used in KEA and some in RTL were already in the band's material before kirk joined
as far as kirk not contributing to the rhythm sections whatsoever, that may be true, i only know him mentioning how he came up with the main riff in enter sandman in that docu, and then i think bob rock fixing it up

James is the guy who writes 90% of the music, and then Lars is the one who offers minor suggestions, like “play that part four times instead of once” kind of stuff. Kirk and especially Rob just shrug and go “okay”.

Hetfield wrote the majority of Kill'em all yes, with Ulrich and Mustaine in The Four Horsemen.
Burton and Heltfield are credited in Ride the Lightning as writers for half of the album with Ulrich too and Kirk being credited in Fade to Black and Creeping Death (although this one everyone knows this one should be credited to Gary Holt lol)
Kirk is also credited as the sole writer for half of Master of Puppets. Hetfield isn't even credited.
And so on.

this is ref. rhythm section, solos of first 2 lps are alleged to be mustaines material, not entirely (on rtl), but mostly

Kirk gets credit for basically inventing thrash when playing with Exodus. They get overlooked because BBB wasn't released until 85, but Exodus were pretty much the first thrash band back in the very early 80s, along with Metallica.

I think Lars contributes a bit more than that. Some of their best songs come from Lars, actually. But since James writes most of the riffs and lyrics I'd say he writes ~70% of the music. Otherwise your asessment is correct. Metallica works kind of like a movie production; where James is the writer, Lars the director and both Rob and Kirk are actors.

lmao well discogs is wrong af. literally just watched an interview yesterday where James reminisces about writing the main riffs to MOP in his garage.
James has writing credits on every single song the band has ever put out besides "Anesthesia". Lars also has writing credits on every single song besides "Motorbreath".

Yeah Metallica is James, he's the best musician and the best writer of them

There is a bit of truth to this. The Four Horseman (aka the mechanix or whatever), jump in the fire, phantom lord, and metal militia, as well as the ride t/t and the call of ktulu all had pretty sizable contributions from Mustaine... so much so that Mustaine would literally go on to re-use riffs and chord progressions from those songs in megadeth songs.
As for the solos, I swear I read a Kirk interview where he said he kept the first couple bars of every Kill Em All solo the same as how Mustaine played it out of respect or something.

ah i read that kirk just adopted the existing solos from dave for all of KEA and some spilled over into the RTL recording

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at this.

doesn't Mustaine have a co-writing credit on Leper Messiah? I thought it was known that he wrote the fast thrasy riff in the middle of the song, or at least the scaley transition riff that plays right before it.
|
| |
He doesn't have an actual writing credit but yeah Mustaine claimed he did write it. I think James and Lars dispute it.
I could go either way tbh... could be but it also isn't a 100% Mustaine-ism in the same way, say, the clean bridge in phantom lord or the chords in Ktulu are.
