I'm not huge on rap rock either and I'm glad they diversified their sound after the first two albums to move away from the nu-metal style.
Having said that, the riff is too good on that song to dismiss, get it stuck in my head all the time lol

It is a good riff
And idk how intentional it is but I love how close the intro to Lotion is to the intro of BQAD. I trick my girlfriend from time to time, she thinks she’s about to hear her favorite Deftones song and then it’s just chino yelling for five minutes.
Idk what it is, I fuck with Lotion but I straight up hate Headup

What was it like to hear this when it came out in 1997? This is so fucking aggressive even by today's standards I don't know how you would've processed it back then.

"What was it like to hear this when it came out in 1997? This is so fucking aggressive even by today's standards I don't know how you would've processed it back then". This was a big deal with the skateboarding kids in 97. And you'd hear it at parties

You wanna know another reason why I hate fat chino? I have listened to all the most famous music genres growing up. In metal it was thrash, in hip hop it was 90s boom bap, in rock it was classic rock. I've heard these genres over and over again in my adolescence. Over and over again the same Fat chino songs. My brother loved fat chino and other fat chino bands. Do I listen to any of these bands now? Fuck no. I simply find all of these artists have named to be primitive by this point, legitimately. I do not feel the urge to listen to ANY of these artists anymore, cause I'd rather see these genres EVOLVE, and not recycle the same ideas over and over again for the rest of eternity. I even see millennials my age no longer checking out any new music anymore. They'd rather just listen to fat chino for the a millionth time, and not even their new shit, their 2000s shit. I refuse to be like that. I refuse to be stagnant with my music taste.

You wanna know another reason why I hate post rock? I have listened to all the most famous music genres growing up. In metal it was nu-metal, in hip hop it was thug rap, in rock it was watered down and made for stadiums. I've heard these genres over and over again in my adolescence. Over and over again the same post rock songs. My brother loved GYBE and other post rock bands. Do I listen to any of these bands now? Fuck no. I simply find all of these artists have named to be primitive by this point, legitimately. I do not feel the urge to listen to ANY of these artists anymore, cause I'd rather see these genres EVOLVE (2017), and not recycle the same ideas over and over again for the rest of eternity. I even see alphas my age no longer checking out any new music anymore. They'd rather just listen to post rock for the a millionth time, and not even their new shit, their 2020s shit. I refuse to be like that. I refuse to be stagnant with my music taste.

Who gives a flying fuck? This guy is truly uncancel-able if he can make a comeback after what he's done. To the bin of irrelevance with fat chino

“What was it like to hear this when it came out in 1997? This is so fucking aggressive even by today's standards I don't know how you would've processed it back then".
‘Roots’ by Sepultura was massively influenced by nu metal and especially Deftones and was released a year before, so this was incredibly tight and elevated the genre but I wouldn’t say the heaviness was unexpected.
