I really hate to admit it but Portnoy was the better fit for DT indeed although I prefer Mangini in general. He's a beast on drums but it seems like he has no freedom at all to spread his wings in DT. Very sad...

Yeah, shackled seems to be the right term here... No place for freethinkers and creativity at all.

i find it hard to believe being 'shackled' in a caliber band like Dream Theater isn't the worst job in the world......i'd take it!

I'd take it too, without thinking twice. But it's a waste of talent. Best other example I can think of is Robert Trujillo shackled in Metallica. It's just sad and sometimes I come to think Rob sold his musical soul in a way. It's not as bad with Mangini though as DT plays in another league - for me at least.

He literally got a mill for joining. For that much I'd shackle myself and throw that key away

Nevertheless it's sad as he was awesome with Infectious Grooves and Suicidal Tendencies.

I just refuse to believe he's too happy with his position in the meantime. To constantly suppress your creative side can't be healthy and satisfactory at all, having sh!tloads of money or not.

at the end of the day it's still a business and/or career.......i'm sure his family is doing damn well because of his current gig

i'd sell myself out in a heartbeat if it meant my family, and maybe generations of it thereof, would never have to worry about finances

I'd just force myself into the creative process, it would be fun for me to get in a different project and try new things with the band mates

"creative process"
With that whole 1 album they've put out since he joined

@Titan: You definitely have a point there, but for me as a fan it's a huge loss.

@Bear: I really don't think Trujillo has the freedom to add to the creative process in Metallica tbh. Just imagine having to deal with Lars' ego all the time... Even the mere thought is smothering...

It would indeed be awful to be forced to play music without you being creative

I don't mind Surrender to Reason and Along for the Ride (surprisingly enough, Dream Theater did write a ballad that's among an album's highlights)

The chorus and lyrics are pretty horrendous but the verses are excellent, especially when all the instruments enter
