Immutable has Shortening Fuse which tries to call back to Straws but is obviously not as good. Maybe They Move Below also. But yeah you might as well listen to Catch 33

Couple things I dont understand about the whole "orange vs blue" debate -

1. The vocals on blue - they honestly sound fine, sometimes even "great" to me. Maybe that's an effect of me having listened to it 180/200+ times idk but I like the vox on blue. Even if "you don't like them" they really don't seem wildly different than vox on other shug albums, so the nature of the argument doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

2. Programmed drums - yeah, we love Haake. Hell, he's probably my fav drummer, maybe save for Reinert (RIP). But no one EVER gives C33 shit for being an exclusively-drumkit from hell record. So once again, the idea that you don't like the drums on blue nothing, but no one ever mentions it on C33...another argument based in a nature that doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

Completely agreed on both counts. And idk, the guitars on orange have always sounded... off to me for some reason. Apparently Fredrik and Marten were always struggling to keep the 7-string guitars in tune, and it kinda shows in that version. Ngl, the guitars are singlehandedly why I prefer Blue over Orange in general. The deep, booming 8-string riffs just sound so much more powerful on the re-release

i like the blue cover more, therefore it’s better

honestly though now that I’m listening to orange, it sounds more like a sharp knife, which i think is how i prefer my shug to sound

I think I agree with you fordy! Have no clear preference for either Yellow/Blue, both have their merits I think.

However, some people do prefer the older, thrashier Meshuggah sound (up to and including Chaosphere) and I could see that for them Yellow has advantages over Blue that do indeed also relate to the sound of Jens (RE Point 1) and/or the programmed drums (RE Point 2). But I'm not sure, I'm empathising with an opinion that isn't mine (obviously, all Meshuggah rules), so those people should speak up if they feel like it!

Yeah I mean there are definitely differences in the sound and I totally get having a preference. Just never really understood the hate for the vocal effects and the programmed drums in the context of their entire body of work

Honestly what really impresses me is how they managed to both streamline and make the production sound more organic/less mechanical with their post C33 run.

1. If you listen to them back to back, the “raw” and less processed vocals of Orange just sound better. They sound more real, more authentic, and more visceral. Blue sounds more mechanical.

2. The drums on C33 may be programmed, but they still sound good in my opinion. I don’t think the drums on blue sound bad, but they just aren’t as good as orange. More on par with C33 though you’re right.

I think what you said nails it though. It’s just personal preference. I agree with Trif too, orange has more of their old school thrash sound to it. I just think that better suits those songs especially

Thats fair....and I think most of what u said technically comes down to personal preference too. And like I said, personal preference is fine and is actually unquantifiable in a debate or argument or what have you, there are just some absolutes in the whole orange vs blue debate that don't jive with me logistically.

But yeah I dig the orange respek
