Factually speaking, The Saddest Day is Converge's best song.

I put on "Distance and Meaning" for my dad, and he winced as if I were scraping silverware against a plate or drilling one of his teeth.
Mission accomplished, Converge.

not even king diamond's searing falsetto

Absolutely, I can't think of another voice that would sound on par with the insanely hardcore music. Off the wall riffs and melt your face off pounding just wouldn't sound right if someone was singing clear as day for the vocals.

Even as far as aggressive vocals go no-one can top Bannon's inhuman shriek. Although Ballou and Newton's vocals add a lot to the album as well.

Without Bannon's vocals, this album would be a 3.5 or 4. They do so much to make this album more emotional and aggressive. Dare I even mention the word abrasive.
